Find out what parents & students are saying about GHFO!
We consider ourselves a GHF family. Over the past 5 years, one or the other of my girls have taken 8 courses through GHF, with more lined up already! My older daughter discovered a love of studying mythology, and my younger daughter has thrived in GHF earth science classes, and was absolutely over the moon to have an opportunity to participate in the Harry Potter class, where she could discuss the series in depth with others who were just as passionate about the stories as she was. Since we started in the program, the GHF course offerings have more than doubled. The subjects are not typical classroom fare (which originally was an adjustment for me as a relatively new homeschooling parent), and have proven to be not only substantive but so engaging that each of the girls has gone to great efforts to participate – I should add that we live in China, and that participating in a live class once a week meant that they were waking up in the middle of the night to be there, that’s how much they’ve loved their classes! ~Barbara W, parent to Caroline & Julia
My son says, “What I like about GHF classes are the discussions and the flexibility of the teachers. They have command enough over the material that they can follow tangents and adapt to students’ needs, interests, and curiosities.” As a parent, I will second that and say that the content in these courses is rich, deep, and engaging. I feel so lucky to have found GHF, where my boy can spend time with other kids who think like he does and with teachers who create a safe and vibrant space for learning. The Aristotle–Newton–Einstein series of classes [based on Joy Hakim’s Story of Science] combines science, math, philosophy and just GREAT thinking by BIG thinkers. Andrea Whitson leads the students on an inspiring journey making connections and deriving the ideas of the great minds (and sometimes proving them wrong!) with many opportunities for extra enrichment and hands on learning at home. Corin and Madeline’s course in US Government and the Policy Process sparked vehement dinner discussions in our home. They somehow managed to teach a class about politics in this political climate without it devolving into partisan arguments. (Send them to Washington!) My son always looked forward to their class and will eagerly take another one with them when it fits in his schedule. ~ Holly T., parent to Peter (age 12)
Hanna has absolutely delighted in taking your animal art class this semester! She has learned a great deal, and savored every moment of the experience and class time, as well as sharing her learning with family and extended family. Hanna is coming out of a very trying and difficult teacher situation in the private school we pulled her from. Your teaching style (Lisa Baba) is just what she needed in this season to “refill her well” and restore her trust! Hanna looks forward to taking more classes with you, and is excited for the painting class this summer! We are also looking at Fall classes now, and I think I will sign both Hanna and her brother up for the Artist Workshop class. ~ Brian V., parent to Hanna (age 10)
Thank you for the simply WONDERFUL time learning about all different animals and how to draw them!
I REALLY enjoyed your class, (more then any of my others,)
And I can’t wait for the painting one my dad signed me up for this summer!
I loved how you taught us so many things about the animal not just the main things. For example, for a dog you thought us about the muzzles and how to use lines to create them.
YOU ARE A GREAT TEACHER and I really can’t wait for the summer classes! ~ Hanna (age 10)
I enjoyed all of my classes with GHF Online this past semester. In Chemistry II, I learned much more about molecules and how chemical reactions work (and pH). Our teacher, Jade Rivera, was so much fun. At the end of the semester, we all played chemistry review jeopardy. I took Beyond Percy Jackson and explored Greek and Roman myths. I loved our class discussions. We learned about allegory and metaphor. I chose to do my final myth project on the Gorgons. I learned a ton of new material in my US Government and the Policy Process course. I learned more about how the U.S. Government works, from the federal level to the local level. I got to interview and learn from various government officials. I enjoyed the time I got to spend researching and completing my final project. In my Number Theory and Proof class, I learned new ways to think like a mathematician and learn about number theory. The homework was fun and challenging! I loved working on my final project. I liked getting to know my teachers and I was surprised by the new friendships I made with the other students. We didn’t want the classes to end. I am excited about starting back up again in a couple of weeks. -Michael C. (age 13)
Our son had the opportunity to take four classes with GHFO this semester. What an incredible experience! The instructors were outstanding – brilliant, kind, engaging, and encouraging. The coursework was exciting and rigorous. The teachers encouraged the students to push further when needed and desired. Each one truly cared about each student. I assumed we would be working with the very best – what we were not expecting was the formation of new friendships. Our son made connections with like-minded peers and had a blast! Although we have been welcomed into various new communities before, it has been quite refreshing to be understood and accepted by GHFO right from the start. What a happy surprise! We are delighted to continue classes next semester and will sing your praises to all who ask! With gratitude.~ Jenny C. (parent)
My son is a mythology fanatic, and when he wanted to take a mythology course, I was worried that it would be too basic to hold his interest. I was so wrong, and he enjoyed every minute, primarily because his instructor was able to go all sorts of directions with the material. He particularly enjoyed her World Mythology class, as it covered many mythologies that he had not been exposed to previously. He looked forward to her classes every week! It’s an even greater testament to her course that my son ended up with a schedule conflict during the second half of the semester but continued to seek out and proactively do his homework every week, even when he knew he wouldn’t be able to participate in the live class.” ~ Ashley Joseph (parent)
Anastasia, my son almost cried when I told him it was the last plant class. I can’t tell you how much he enjoyed you and the class. I consoled him with the fact that we signed up for Evolution with you next semester. Thank you for providing him with such a wonderful introduction to online learning! We look forward to next semester. ~ Heather B. (parent)
Thanks so much, Anastasia! I really appreciated how positive and encouraging you were. ~Heather R. (parent)
My son loved Lisa Baba’s comic book class. He started off reluctant to share his art, but Lisa’s positive feedback and the supportive classroom community allowed him to not only share his work with others, but flourish and grow as a storyteller and an artist. I highly recommend Lisa’s classes. ~Teresa Ledford (parent)
I loved this class! The instructor is definitely knowledgeable about mythology, even for mythology lovers. I especially loved her world mythology course. Looking at similarities and differences of mythologies across cultures was awesome. ~ Will (age 12)
I’m thrilled! I’m beyond excited that he’s learning, still glad to be in class, and that he’s not taking away from the class for others. We’ve waited a long time to find something class-wise he could engage in and NOT ruin the experience for the other kids. Thank you so much for your patience and kindness – it’s not easy for [my son] to keep focus when he feels he’s dumb (how not knowing something is an opportunity to learn it, and not symptomatic of stupidity), and you handled it with grace. THANK YOU!!! ~ Care M. to Instructor Madeline Goodwin, Intro to Planet Earth
The student I referred to you last semester loves his class!!! It is getting RAVE reviews! What a wonderful opportunity for this kid! – Kathi Kearney, Hollingworth Center for Highly Gifted Children
The class was worth twice what we paid, but thanks for keeping the price very reasonable. – Rachel Morris (parent)
I started taking myth classes in the Spring of 2013 (Beyond Percy Jackson), and I loved it. I live in China, so the class was middle of the night for me, and my mom wouldn’t let me wake up for it. About 4 weeks into the class, we took a trip to France, and I did it live, because it was around dinnertime. I loved it so much, that when we came home, I pleaded with my mom to let me do it live, because I love the material, and I’ve made some really great friends. After Beyond Percy Jackson, I took 2 semesters of comparative mythology. ~ Caroline (age 13)
My son just wrote something – voluntarily! I love these classes! – An anonymous parent
I just wanted to send you a quick thank you for being such an awesome teacher [Jade Rivera]. I loved eavesdropping on the class when I could. The way you laugh with the kids and seem to get enjoyment from them is so heartwarming. I hope you realize how special that makes you. I was talking about that to my mom tonight. I was saying on too many occasions Will has been in situations where people who were supposed to teach him were just annoyed by him, which just breaks my heart and certainly does not foster learning, and it is so obvious that you [Jade Rivera] genuinely like these children and with your guidance they thrive. What an amazing gift you give these quirky kids. If only we could just clone you to teach all the gifted children of the world. 😁 ~ Denise Holcomb, parent
Thank you for the great feedback on [my daughter]’s research paper and all the support provided throughout. She really learnt a lot and will surely be able to utilize these skills moving forward. I know she enjoyed your class and we are looking into your US Government & Policy Process course for fall semester, schedule permitting; we will certainly look into the other courses you’ve advised about as well. – Anonymous parent
I just wanted to thank you for a fantastic Anthropology class this semester! I am not sure how [my daughter] performed or what she shared in class (she can be shy), so I wanted you to know that she LOVED IT. Today she was sad class had ended, and that has never happened before. I would listen in on classes now and then, and could tell how great you were in managing the kids. The technology was used well, nothing got out of hand. You got them thinking, encouraged them, and helped stretch their minds. We have taken many online classes over the past few years & this stands out as a favorite. [My daughter] has signed up for your photography class this summer so she’ll be talking to you again soon! ~ Katie (parent)
